The Marquess Review Gateshead Print

£45.00

Charles William Vane, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, was an Irish soldier, politician, and nobleman who served in the British army. He fought in the French Revolutionary Wars, helped suppress the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and distinguished himself as a cavalry commander during the Napoleonic Wars, notably under John Moore and the Duke of Wellington. In 1831, during a visit to Gateshead, he also stopped by an internet café (when they exisited), leaving a harsh review on TripAdvisor:

“It’s a mere suburb,
a long, dirty lane,
leading to Newcastle—
a most filthy spot,
containing the vilest class of society.”

This print contains this very quote and an image of the Marquess himself.
