Huh? You’ve never heard of Gateshead’s own airline company Saltwell Airways before? I’ve been there, done it and bought the t-shirt. It’s true! It must be! It’s on a t-shirt! And these Saltwell Airways tops are certainly living up to their name by literally flying off the shelves (note: not literally). They are made by Since1982, a local company set up last year by artist and designer Stephen Gibbs with the aim of delivering beautifully designed clobber. And his Gateshead range has really caught our eye with a number of local landmarks being immortalised in 100% semi-combed ringspun cotton. The Dunston Rocket (RIP) gets another day in the sun, as do BALTIC and Sage Gateshead; the Angel of the North gives us a twirl, and one of the most distinctive pubs in the region, The Central (which looks like a mini version of the flat iron building in New York), also gets its own design, with the unarguable legend “Drink Local” printed above it. We always knew that Gateshead was amazing, and now the whole world knows it by way of printed cotton.
